Mainz has one of the larger low-emission zones of Germany. It extends far beyond the city center. The river Rhine, the A60 and the A643 form the borders within which the emissions sticker is required. Only the harbor along the river north of Mainz is not part of the zone. This is so that large trucks can still visit the companies and factories located here. Keep in mind that the city of Wiesbaden has a low-emission zone as well. It starts on the other side of the Rhine.

Exceptions

Unlike in other cities, there are no roads that go through the emission zone on which a sticker is not needed. To be clear though, a sticker is never required on German highways. If you pass by Mainz on the A60 or A643, an emissions sticker is not required and you will not be fined. Only if you leave the highway and then enter the low-emission zone, a sticker will be required. The beginning of the zone is clearly indicated.

Parking outside the low-emission zone

The low-emission zone of Mainz is fairly large, which makes parking outside the zone and then continuing by public transport not easy. What you could do is park on the large parking terrain at Mühldreieck (A on the map). From here you can take tramlines 50 and 51 to reach the city center in about 15 minutes. Mühldreieck is easy to reach from the A60.
