Low-emission zone in Ludwigsburg

The low-emission zone of Ludwigsburg just north of Stuttgart exists since 1 march 2008. Apart from the city itself, many smaller towns and villages around Ludwigsburg are also part of the zone. The low-emission zone of Ludwigsburg is indicated with orange on the map above. This is the zone which you can only enter if your vehicle has a German emissions sticker. As you can see, not only Ludwigsburg itself but also many smaller towns and villages lie within the zone. These include Asperg, Bietigheim-Bissingen, Freiberg, Ingersheim, Kornwestheim Markgröningen, Möglingen, Pleidelsheim, Remseck and Tamm. Also good to know is that in the south the low-emission of Ludwigsburg borders the low-emission zone of Stuttgart. In the southeast, it borders the low-emission zone of Leonberg/Hemmingen. While each zone is administered separately, for visitors it serves as one large low-emission zone with the same rules.

Exceptions

There is one exception within the low-emission zone of Ludwigsburg and that is the A81. If you leave and enter the zone on this highway, an emissions sticker is not required. On the map the A81 is indicated with a blue line. If you drive south on the A81, you will enter the low-emission zone of Leonberg/Hemmingen, where the sticker also is not required as long as you stay on the highway.

Parking outside the low-emission zone

Because the low-emission zone of Ludwigsburg is one of the largest in Germany, parking outside it and then continuing your way by public transport is not very practical. What you could do is park in Benningen (A on the map). From here you can take the S-Bahn to Freiberg, Ludwigsburg, Aspberg, Tamm and Bietigheim-Bissingen. Unless you have a very old vehicle that is not eligible, it is easier and cheaper to just buy the emissions sticker.

Which emissions sticker do you need in Ludwigsburg?

The green emissions sticker

As in nearby Stuttgart and Leonberg/Hemmingen, it is the green emissions sticker that you need for your vehicle in the low-emission zone of Ludwigsburg. If you do not have this sticker, you risk a fine of €100 if caught.

Where can you buy the emissions sticker?

The green emissions sticker can be bought all over Germany, for example at vehicle inspection companies such as DEKRA and TÜV, but also at many car dealerships. The sticker is not for sale at gas stations along the highway. When you buy the sticker, take you vehicle registration certificate with you and ask for an Umweltplakette. That is the common German name for the emissions sticker.

Ludwigsburg

Ludwigsburg is a city that developed around Ludwigsburg Palace, one of the many palaces of the Dukes of Württemberg. It is the largest still existing baroque palace of Germany. Two smaller palaces, both of which were also built by the Dukes of Württemberg, are Seeschloss Monrepos and Schloss Favorite. They lie just north of Ludwigsburg. The historical center of Ludwigsburg is a pleasant alternative for those who want to escape the many tourists in Stuttgart.
