map: Umweltzone in Herten

The low-emission zone of Herten is shown with orange on the map above. As you can see, the zone also extends beyond Herten. This is because since 1 January 2012, the low-emission zone of Herten is part of the larger low-emission zone of the Ruhr area. Nearby cities where an emissions sticker is also required are Gelsenkirchen and Recklinghausen.

Exceptions

As in all of Germany, highways are not part of the low-emission zone. This means that in Herten you can pass through the low-emission zone on the A2 and the A42 without having to need an emissions sticker. Keep in mind that you cannot leave the highways as long as you are within the low-emission zone of the Ruhr area. Roads that form the border of the low-emission zone are not part of it.

Parking outside the low-emission zone

Because Herten lies in the middle of the low-emission zone of the Ruhr area, parking outside the zone is not very convenient. Herten also happens to be the largest city in Germany without a train station, which makes it even more difficult to reach if you do not have a car. You could first take a train to nearby Recklinghausen and then take a bus to Herten, but that would require a lot of time and planning. By far the easiest option is to buy the emissions sticker.

Which emissions sticker do you need in Herten?

The green emissions sticker

As everywhere in the low-emission zone of the Ruhr area, it is the green emissions sticker which you need in Herten. If you do not have a sticker or if you have one of the older red or yellow stickers, you risk a fine of €100

Availability of the emissions sticker

The city of Herten does not sell the emissions sticker online for foreign license plates. Instead, you can use the order form on our website. If your vehicle is eligible for the green sticker, it will be sent out to your home address within one working day. Payment options include credit card, Apple Pay, SEPA bank transfer and other options.

Order your emissions sticker

If you do not have enough time left to wait for the sticker to arrive by mail, you can still buy a sticker at larger German car dealerships and at vehicle inspection companies such as DEKRA and TÜV. You will need to bring your vehicle registration certificate with you. Also keep in mind that during the weekend, many places where you can buy the sticker will be closed. The sticker is not for sale at gas stations along the highway.

The most important tourist attraction in the city is Schloss Herten, a small castle surrounded by English landscape gardens. The history of the castle goes back to the Middle Ages, but most parts of the building that you can visit nowadays are from the 16th and 17th centuries. Apart from Schloss Herten, there is not a lot to see and do in the city. With 60.000 inhabitants, Herten is a typical small industrial city in the Ruhr area.
