Within the orange area on the map, an emissions sticker is compulsory for most motorized vehicles. As you can see, almost the entire city center of Recklinghausen lies within this low-emission zone. The L511 forms the border of the zone north of the center. In the east it cuts through the residential areas. To the west and south, the low-emission zone continues as the larger, continuous low-emission zone of the Ruhr area. Please look at our page of the Ruhr area for a map of this entire zone.

Exceptions

As anywhere in Germany, you do not need an emissions sticker on the highways in Recklinghausen. If you enter and leave the low-emission zone on either the A2 or A43, an emissions sticker is not required. You will not receive a fine even if you drive a very old and polluting diesel car.

Parking outside the low-emission zone

If however, you need to be in Recklinghausen and you do not have a vehicle that is eligible for the emissions sticker, then it will be difficult to reach the city center. Unlike other large cities in the region, Recklinghausen does not have an extensive S-Bahn which you can use. You could park outside the low-emission zone and continue on foot, but depending on your destination you would have to walk very far. One slightly easier possibility is to park in Haltern, a small city about 15 km north of Recklinghausen. From here you can take a train.

If you are in Germany already, you can still purchase an emissions sticker at vehicle inspection companies and many larger car dealerships. Make sure to check the opening times beforehand, especially during the weekend. The emissions sticker cannot be bought at gas stations along the highway.
