Map of the low-emission zone in Münster
The low-emission zone of Münster is shown with orange on the map. As you can see, almost the entire historical city center and the streets between the center and the train station lie within the zone. The suburbs and industrial areas of Münster are not part of the low-emission zone. You do not need to worry that you will accidentally drive into a part of the city where an emissions sticker is required. On most intersections, the start of the zone is clearly indicated.
Exceptions
Unlike in some other cities, there are no roads in Münster that you can use to pass through the zone without an emissions sticker. The roads that form the border of the zone, such as the B54, are not part of it. Also the Bahnhofstraße and the parking garage close to the station lie just outside the low-emission zone.
Parking outside the low-emission zone
The low-emission zone of Münster is not very large. If you do not have an emissions sticker and want to visit the historical city center, it is easy enough to park outside the zone. Your best option is the Schlossplatz (A on the map) just in front of the university where you will find about 1000 parking spaces. From the Schlossplatz you can walk to the city center in about 10 minutes.
Which emissions sticker do you need in Münster?
In Münster the green emissions sticker is required. All electric vehicles, most vehicles with a petrol engine newer than 1992 and most vehicles with a diesel engine from after 2005 are eligible for the green sticker.
Where can you buy the German emissions sticker?
You can buy the sticker in Münster itself, for example at vehicle inspection companies such as DEKRA and TÜV. Larger car dealerships will also be able to help you out, but the sticker cannot be bought at gas stations along the highway. Good to know is that you may also buy the sticker elsewhere in Germany. All German emissions stickers are always valid all over the country, as long as the color of the sticker corresponds with the color required in the low-emission zone.
An easier option to obtain your emissions sticker is to buy it online. A copy of your vehicle registration certificate, which you would normally have to present at a vehicle inspection company, can be uploaded on the order form. If your vehicle is eligible, the sticker will be issued within one working day and sent to your postal address. If your vehicle is not eligible, your money will be refunded.
