map: Umweltzone in Mülheim

Since 1 January 2012, the low-emission zone of Mülheim is part of the much larger low-emission zone of the Ruhr area. This is why the orange zone on the map, which represents the low-emission zone, also extends to the west, north and east. If you want to see a map of the entire low-emission zone, please look at our information page about the Ruhr area. As far as Mülheim itself is concerned: the low-emission zone covers almost the entire city. The borders are roughly formed by the B1 in the southeast and the B223 and the Saarner Straße in the southwest.

Exceptions

As in the rest of the Ruhr area, an emissions sticker is never required on highways. This means that if you drive through Mülheim on the A40, you will not receive a fine for not having an emissions sticker. Do keep in mind that you cannot leave the highway until you leave the low-emission zone of the Ruhr area.

Parking outside the low-emission zone

If you do not have an emissions sticker but still want to visit Mülheim, you can park at the tennis court on the Uhlenhortsweg (A on the map) and then take a tram on line 102 to the city center. Another option is the parking lot of Airport Essen/Mülheim (B), from where you can take a tram on line 104.

Which emissions sticker do you need in Mülheim?

The green emissions sticker

As in the rest of the low-emission zone of the Ruhr area, it is the green emissions sticker that is required for most motorized vehicles in Mülheim. Without this green emissions sticker or with the older yellow and red stickers, you risk a fine of €100.

If you already are in Germany, you can still buy the sticker at vehicle inspection companies all over Germany. Take your vehicle registration certificate with you and ask for an Umweltplakette, the common German name for the emissions sticker. Do look up the opening times before you leave, especially if you want to buy the sticker during the weekend. The emissions sticker is not sold at gas stations along the highway.

Mülheim has more than 160.000 inhabitants, but to this day it remains a large industrial city without much history. Because of the forested surroundings, it is a relatively popular residential city in the Ruhr area. Interesting to visit are the medieval castle Schloss Broich and several small museums.
