The low-emission zone within which you need an emissions sticker is shown with orange on the map above. In Magdeburg this zone is relatively small. Only in the city center is an emissions sticker required. In the suburbs and industrial areas a sticker is not necessary.

Exceptions

The most important exception in Magdeburg is the B71. If you use this road to pass through the city, an emissions sticker is not required. The same goes for the Maybachstraße, which you can use to reach the train station from the B71. Both roads are shown on the map with blue lines. On the roads that make up the borders of the low-emission zone, a sticker also is not necessary. These are the B1 north of the city center, the Schleinufer along the river Elbe and the Europaring, Westring and Südring. The start of the low-emission zone is clearly indicated on major intersections. You do not need to worry you will enter the zone by accident.

Parking outside the low-emission zone

Unlike in some other German cities, it is rather easy to park outside the low-emission zone in Magdeburg and still reach the city center. For this you can use the parking garage underneath the Allee-Center (A on the map), which can be reached from the Schleinufer. The entrance is right next to the bridge over the river. If you park here, an emissions sticker is not necessary. Most shopping streets and attractions such as the cathedral lie within walking distance from the Allee-Center. If you need to be elsewhere in Magdeburg, you can still take a tram at the northern exit.

Which emissions sticker do you need in Magdeburg?

The green emissions sticker

While initially all colors of the emissions sticker were allowed in Magdeburg, from 1 January 2013 you need the green sticker. Without the green emissions sticker or with one of the red or yellow stickers, you risk a fine of €100.

If you already are in Germany, you can buy your sticker at most vehicle inspection companies. Once again you need to have your vehicle registration certificate with you. Ask for an Umweltplakette of a Feinstaubplakette. Also keep in mind that you should buy the sticker before you drive into a low-emission zone and that during the weekend most vehicle inspection companies are closed. The sticker is not sold at gas stations along the highway.

What is there to see and do in Magdeburg?

Magdeburg

In medieval times, Magdeburg was one of the most important cities in Germany. It was in this time that the Dom of Magdeburg was built, a beautifully decorated cathedral that towers high above the city. In the historical city center you will also find plenty of architecture representing the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. The Grüne Zitadelle however, is a fascinating building in 2005. For tourists the numerous museums of Magdeburg are worth a visit too.
