Low-emission zone in Heidenheim

Heidenheim an der Brenz, a city in in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, introduced a low-emission zone on 1 January 2012. The low-emission zone of Heidenheim is shown on the map above with orange. All residential areas and business parks lie within the zone, unlike in some other cities in Germany where an emission sticker is only needed in the city center. There are no exceptions such as designated roads which you can use to bypass the low-emission zone of Heidenheim. A sticker is also required on the B19 and the B446. The latter connects Heidenheim with Göppingen and Stuttgart.

Parking outside the low-emission zone

If you need to be in Heidenheim, but if your car is not eligible for an emission sticker, you can still park outside the low-emission zone. This is possible along the B19 north (A) as well as south (B) of the city, where you will find a small station from where you can take a train to the city center. If you approach Heidenheim from west or east on the B446, there is no such possibility. You would have to walk to reach the city center, which would be very impractical.

Which emissions sticker do you need in Heidenheim?

The green emissions sticker

As in all cities in Baden-Württemberg, it is the green emissions sticker that is needed to drive within the low-emission zone of Heidenheim. If your vehicle does not have this sticker, you will be fined €100 if caught.

If you already are in Germany or if you leave soon, you can also buy the sticker on the road in Germany. Contrary to popular belief, the emissions stickers cannot be bought at gas stations along the highway. You have to drop by at a vehicle inspection company such as DEKRA or TÜV. Most larger car dealerships will also be able to sell you the sticker. Make sure you buy the sticker before you reach Heidenheim or any other city with a low-emission zone.

While Heidenheim is not an important tourist destination, there is a lot to see and do. On a mountain towering above the city there is Schloß Hellenstein, a medieval castle that goes back to the year 1096. Inside the castle is a small museum. The historical city center of Heidenheim offers an art gallery and Museum im Römerbad about the time when the Romans lived here. Several old churches and half-timbered houses are other tourist attractions worth seeing.
