Low-emission zone in Freiburg

Following other cities in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Freiburg introduced a low-emission zone on 1 January 2010. Within this zone, an emissions sticker is required for most motorized vehicles. The low-emission zone of Freiburg is marked with orange on the map above. This is the part of the city within which an emissions sticker is required. If you do not have a sticker, you risk a fine of €100. As you can see on the map, the historical city center as well as most residential areas all lie within the low-emission zone. The larger business park and the airport north of the city are not part of the zone. Here, an emissions sticker is not necessary.

Parking outside the low-emission zone

If you want to visit Freiburg but don’t want to go through the trouble of getting an emissions sticker, then there are a few possibilities to park free of charge outside the low-emission zone. The city of Freiburg prefers visitors to use one of the P+R terrains west and north of the city. We listed a few below and included the address, number of parking spaces and which tram line you can take to reach the city center. The numbers in front correspond to the numbers on the map above.

Which emissions sticker do you need in Freiburg?

The green emissions sticker

These days the only emissions sticker allowed within the low-emission zone of Freiburg is the green sticker. If you do not have a sticker or if your vehicle has one of the the older red or yellow stickers, you cannot drive in Freiburg.

Availability of the emissions sticker for Freiburg

As anywhere in Germany, the sticker can be bought at vehicle inspection companies as well as most larger car dealerships. Do purchase your sticker before you reach Freiburg however. If you wait until you are in Freiburg you risk receiving a fine. Ask for a Umweltplakette or Feinstaubplakette in German and bring your vehicle registration certificate with you. Also think of the often limited opening hours during the weekend.

Freiburg, or Freiburg im Breisgau as it is called in Germany, is the most important city of the Black Forest and also one of Germany’s most beautiful cities. The historical city center goes back to medieval times, with the 116 meters tall cathedral being one of the main tourist attractions. Half-timbered houses, old city gates and the Bächle, small water runnels through the city center, are some of the other sights. On rainy days there are numerous museums you can visit. Freiburg is also home to the famous Albert Ludwig University.
